Faithkeeper and Sitting Chief Oren Lyons

With a title like that, you could reasonably expect to see some Wendell Berry-type comments. Ordinarily that might be the case. Our local version of Berry, not as a literary artiste, but as cultural and environmental prophet, is Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper of the Onondaga Nation’s Turtle Clan and a Sitting Chief of the Haudenosaunee (better known to the rest of us white folks in the US as the Iroquois). In this picture, Chief Lyons stands on the sacred shore of Onondaga Lake, which has the dubious honor of being the most polluted lake in North America and possibly the second-most polluted lake on the planet.

The most recent issue of Orion Magazine has a terrific article and interview with Oren here. Like all prophets, Oren gives us so much to think about that I’ll need a separate post for it all; in the meantime, do have a look at the piece and feel free to generate some discussion.

Big question: What could and should our christian faith bring to the table other than the 1492 Law of Discovery?
